TL;DR

The 2025 Release Wave 1 of Dynamics 365 Business Central introduces manufacturing enhancements focused on product design tools. You can now attach documents to production bills of materials (BOMs), compare BOM versions, add multiple items at once with the Select Items feature, and edit BOMs directly in Excel.

Introduction

I want to show you some recently released manufacturing enhancements in Release 2025 Wave 1 of Dynamics 365 Business Central.

These enhancements are around the product design tools, so let’s take a look at them.

We’re going to look at:

  1. How you can now attach documents to the production bill of materials.

  2. A new function where I can compare different versions of a single bill of material.

  3. The Select Items feature, which allows you to add multiple items into a bill of material in one screen.

  4. Edit in Excel, which is now part of the production bill of materials.

Attaching Documents to the Production BOM

Let’s take a look at this bill of material here for a blood pressure monitor.

We see the original bill of material here off to the side, but now we also have different documents. These are documents I can add to the bill of material, and they’ll follow this BOM throughout the system.

It’s easy to do—just click on this, and I can upload files or drag and drop them in. I can have multiple files attached.

Viewing and Managing BOM Versions

In this bill of material, I have several versions. The active version right now is 1.0. I can drill into that and see the details.

I can also view all available versions by clicking the Version button. From here, I can open any version and see the details, including status—such as whether or not it’s certified.

If I exit a version that’s not certified, Business Central will ask if I want to certify it. I’ll say no for now.

Comparing BOM Versions

Here’s a feature where I can compare different versions of a bill of material.

I have the BOM for the blood pressure monitor and multiple versions. Now I can compare them side-by-side. If I scroll down, I can see new items that replaced existing ones.

From here, I can easily download this comparison to Excel to work with it more easily or share with coworkers.

Using the Select Items Feature

I’ve been able to copy a BOM to create a new one, but now I can use the Select Items feature to quickly build a new bill of material.

This allows me to select multiple items for the BOM at once, instead of adding them individually. For example, I can select all the components related to my blood pressure monitor in one go and add them to the BOM from a single screen.

Once I refresh, I can see all the items in the new BOM.

Editing a BOM in Excel

Right now, my BOM has no quantities. I can use the Edit in Excel functionality to change that.

In Excel, I see all the BOM items. I scroll over to the quantities column, enter a value of one, and copy it down for all lines.

When I’m done, I publish the changes back to Business Central. The system confirms the update was successful, and when I refresh the BOM in Business Central, I see the updated quantities.

Additional BOM Insights

From the BOM, I can look at a component item, use the Where Used feature, and get details on where else that component is used in my system and how it’s included in other products.

Conclusion

That’s a quick look at the manufacturing enhancements related to product design tools in the 2025 Release Wave 1 of Dynamics 365 Business Central.
