Dynamics 365 Business Central – Simple Dimensional Reporting (DEMO)

I want to show you some simple dimensional reporting in Dynamics 365 Business Central. One of the big advantages of Business Central is the ability to use Dimensions when you post transactions and when you report on transactions. The dimensions add additional value to your chart of accounts and make reporting really easy. Let’s take a look at three out-of-the-box solutions that you can use today.

Trial Balance per Global Dimension

The first report to look at is the “Trial Balance per Global Dimension.” This report is easy to set up, and it’s a standard report within the system. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Select the global Dimension that you want to report on.
  2. Choose the columns you’re interested in (e.g., balance columns).
  3. Apply a date filter.

Let’s take a look at an example. For this demonstration, I selected the business group called “Home.” This report focuses on transactions that have the “Home” dimension. It provides insights into results from the previous year, the current year, and differences in variances.

Trial Balance Spread by Global Dimension

Another useful report is the “Trial Balance Spread by Global Dimension.” Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Specify the dimension group and date.
  2. Run the report.

This report shows all transactional data in the date range, broken out by dimension. If columns like “Home,” “Industrial,” and “Office” don’t add up to the total, it means there are transactions without specified dimensional values. For in-depth analysis, consider using analysis views.

Analysis by Dimensions

The most versatile option for analysis is to use analysis views. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Create an analysis view for the general ledger.
  2. Run analysis by dimensions.

You can select which business group values you want to display, and the view will show all account values spread out by dimension. You can drill down into specific transactions, gaining additional insights into how dimension values were totaled. If needed, export the data to Excel for further analysis.

This has been a quick overview of three out-of-the-box reporting tools available in Dynamics 365 Business Central, allowing you to analyze accounting information broken down by dimensions.
