What is Microsoft Dynamics GP?

How Microsoft Dynamics GP Got Its Start

Dynamics GP was originally developed by Great Plains Software, an independent company located in Fargo, North Dakota. The main campus for Microsoft Dynamics and the Microsoft Office team still resides in Fargo, North Dakota today. Great Plains was one of the first accounting packages in the United States that was designed to be a multi-user system running on the Microsoft Windows platform. It was also one of the first accounting software packages to run on a Microsoft SQL Server database. In 2001, Microsoft purchased Great Plains and then Microsoft rebranded the product Microsoft Dynamics GP as it is known today. The acquisition gave Microsoft the ability to give their medium to large enterprise customers “one-stop shopping” under the Microsoft brand, with the combination of Windows, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, and Great Plains Accounting software. Similarly Microsoft purchased other software around the world to complete their product line of Dynamics software including Microsoft Dynamics NAV (Navisions), Microsoft Dynamics SL (Solomon), Microsoft Dynamics AX (Axapta) and custom built internally their Microsoft Dynamics CRM system.

How Dynamics GP Can Help Your Business

Microsoft Dynamics GP offers out-of-the-box functionality, so you can get up and running quickly but still be able to adapt the changing needs of your business. GP is full featured financial management software built on the affordable and highly-scalable platform of Microsoft technologies. It is a complete solution for managing and integrating finances, supply chain management, manufacturing, e-commerce, project accounting, field service, and payroll/human resources. Start with what you need now, and easily adapt as your business needs change. Comprehensive capabilities and rapid, flexible deployment options help you get up and running quickly and affordably.

A Product You and Your Employees Are Familiar With

Dynamics GP was constructed so it would look and feel familiar to the other Microsoft Office products and Microsoft technologies (the product teams are both based in Fargo, North Dakota). Because of this, there will be a very little learning curve for employees compared to other ERP systems where it will be a total new process. Microsoft Dynamics GP ensures that your people work effectively from the start and allows you to integrate information, processes, and reporting capabilities across your entire business. Microsoft Dynamics GP combined with Microsoft Dynamics CRM equips your people with a complete view of customer information and broad, deep business management capabilities.

Multiple Ways to Deploy

Microsoft Dynamics GP gives you the flexibility to deploy your software the way that fits your business best:

  • On Premise: Traditional form of deployment. Purchase the software and deploy it on site on your own servers
  • Hosted: Purchase Dynamics GP and pay a small monthly fee to have it deployed by a Microsoft Hosting provider on your own private cloud. Best for companies that want to own the rights to their software and when they upgrade/change it, but don’t have the internal IT team and servers to support the product
  • Subscription: Exclusively in the Cloud. Pay a monthly fee to rent the software and have it hosted in on a multi-tenant server in the Cloud.

Depending on how you choose to deploy, TMC can get you up and running quickly with tools to accelerate installation, set up and extend core functionality, and migrate data from your legacy systems.

Be Confident in Where GP is Going

Microsoft Dynamics GP is backed by millions of dollars in ongoing investment in research and development by Microsoft. This is proven by the roadmap that they publish below, so that you can grow your business with confidence, knowing that the product is here now and here to stay:

“Microsoft Dynamics is on a strong growth path and is seeing great traction market. We are innovating at a rapid pace and are excited about what we plan to deliver to our customers in the upcoming months.”  Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella
