Why move from Microsoft GP to Dynamics 365 Business Central?

Why are Microsoft GP Users Moving to Dynamics 365 Business Central?

A lot of our customers are moving from Dynamics GP to Business Central and there’s a number of reasons that they’re doing that. Let’s take a look at a few of them. A lot of customers want to move their ERP system to the cloud. There’s a number of reasons for this. One is it really diminishes the need for on-site security. The users IT department doesn’t have to worry as much about on-site security. Generally with a cloud ERP system there are automatic upgrades that are pushed out by the developer. These are version upgrades, the bug fixes and their compliance requirements.

Migrating to the cloud also eliminates the requirements for on-site servers and this is a big one. The IT department is trying to diminish the amount of time that they have to spend managing servers.

Migrating your ERP system into cloud eliminates SQL servers, application servers, and also reporting servers – makes everything just a lot easier. Also migrating your ERP system to the cloud also aligns with organizational strategy. A lot of clients are moving different parts of their business to the cloud. The ERP system is easy to move to the cloud. Another benefit of migrating the ERP system to the cloud is that there’s generally a new modern and simplified interface and this is true with Business Central. You have similar functionality as Dynamics GP but it’s easier to use.

A good example of this is the purchase orders for jobs. In Dynamics GP you’re going to have a purchase order, a special purchase order for projects, you’re going to have a purchase receipt, you’re going to purchase invoice, separate screens for projects, and this just complicates the reporting as well.

With Business Central you can do all the purchasing activity in one screen. Also there’s lookup functionality anywhere in the system. Anytime you want to look up a feature or function you can do that by doing a quick lookup in the upper right hand side of the screen. This lookup is available anytime you’re in Business Central. In addition to the system lookup there’s always contacts relevant help available from every field, in every screen. This makes it easy to learn a system and also find out more information about a particular screen you may have been using for a while.

Another reason that Dynamics GP clients are moving to Business Central is because of the flexible chart of accounts in Dynamics GP. You’ve got a static chart of accounts, you have to setup all the accounts ahead of time, all the possible combinations between your main account and the different segments that you may have defined in your chart of accounts.

In Business Central we use dimensions. This makes it a lot easier to set up your chart of accounts and also use it and it eliminates the need for analytical accounting. If you’re using analytical accounting in Dynamics GP, you know how challenging that can be. Besides facilitating posting and management of account transactions, in Business Central it also greatly enhances reporting. It makes it a lot easier to get that information out of Business Central and use it in your business because Dynamics GP customers are considering moving to the cloud.

These are three of the reasons that we see most often. The desire to migrate not only the ERP system but also other systems within the organization. There’s a new modern simplified interface – makes it easier to learn the system and use the system and there’s a flexible chart of accounts which makes it easier to post transactions, manage transactions and greatly enhances reporting.
