Do you remember that little cricket named Jiminy teaching you how to spell Encyclopedia? He was a real life-saver when it came to elementary spelling tests. When it came to spelling that word his little voice would pop into the subconscious and start singing: EN-CY-CLO-PED-IA. The spelling test could have been a flop, but because Encyclopedia was spelled correctly, it didn’t matter. Sadly, the massive volume hardcover encyclopedia is no longer the source of all factual information and is fast being forgotten on dusty shelves thanks to the advances of the internet.

The encyclopedia has existed for more than two-thousand years cataloging world facts and histories. The first encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Britannica, made for public consumption were published in 1768-1771. Over the years the Encyclopedia restructured itself from three volumes and one editor to several volumes and a fleet of editors.   Encyclopedias were boosted as being a lasting educational resource.
